The Season Of Red

Everything red is absolutely in season at Oakridge Centre – from the vibrant celebrations of Lunar New Year to the beckoning of romance for the upcoming Valentine’s Day! So, what’s the appeal? Red has more personal associations than any other colour. Recognized as a stimulant, red is inherently exciting, and the amount of red is directly related to the level of energy perceived. Less words need to be spoken when a dozen red roses arrive! Experts say that red lipstick is a sign of quiet confidence (though I am not sure how quiet). What if you drive a bright red vehicle? The message you are sending is one of being sexy, high-energy, and dynamic.

The meaning of red around the globe:

        • In Chinese culture, colours corresponded with the five primary elements, the directions, and the four seasons. Red was associated with fire, south, and summer. It is also associated with good luck and fortune.
        • In Japan, the colour red is associated closely with a few deities in Shinto and Buddhist traditions, so statues of these deities are often decked in red clothing or painted red.
        • In Sweden, Falun red (red based on the pigment from the Falun mine) was reserved for the privileged class.
        • To the Hindu, red symbolizes joy, life, energy, and creativity.
        • Islamic, Hindu, and Chinese brides traditionally wore red.
        • Red amulets were worn in many cultures to prolong life.
        • Red represents beauty in many languages and cultures, including Russian.

More about red:

        • Red is the highest arc of the rainbow.
        • Red is the first color you lose sight of at twilight.
        • Feng shui recommends painting the front door of a home red to invite prosperity to the residents.
        • Red is a colour associated with poison, passion, and seduction.

Here are a few of my favourites this season!

Safeway – The symbol of true love can be found at Safeway with that perfect dozen red roses!

DavidsTea – ‘Tis the season for a little “immune booster”, the natural way! From a tumeric glow, Vitamin C boost, or honey ginseng, you’ll be feeling invincible in no time.

Harry Rosen – This new men’s Faber Bomber in “Fire Bud Camo” by Canada Goose is great for mid-season weather and up to -5, which is perfect for the West Coast (especially lately).

Stuart Weitzman – Not sure what I like better about the “Cleo Pyramid 50” pump: the pointed toe, the gold metallic details, or the adorable and feminine kitten heel. These could work beyond work!

MAC – “Ruby Woo” in Retro Matte is their #1 selling lipstick right now. Nothing says confidence like a beautiful set of red lips – an absolute statement for the season. Just be warned that it’s a blue-red, so not all skin tones can pull it off. Have them try it on you before you buy!

MaxMara – What’s not to love about the clean lines and, of course, unrivaled Italian touch of the reversible “Cindy” tote? MaxMara always makes the short-list for the fashion-conscious.
