Jaw Dropping Design

Many years ago around this time, my cousin announced that she was making her prom dress out of duct tape! After wondering why she would entertain such out of the box thinking, I was pleasantly surprised at how beautifully it turned out. The level of skill and the amount of work that she put into creating her masterpiece was evident and awe inspiring, particularly for me as I’ve never felt confident enough in my artistic abilities to even attempt such a large and intricate project.

I’m in awe once again.

This week Oakridge Centre welcomed back Brown Paper Couture. In partnership with the Design Formation program at Langara College, this stunning display features 22 couture gowns recreated from modest materials, including craft paper, cardboard, and coffee filters. Some of the dresses even feature jewelry designed out of glue and paper clips! The level of detail is unbelievable.

While all of the dresses are incredible, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t have favourites… Here are three of my top picks.

My Personal Favourites

These three dresses absolutely stole my heart.

Detailing Pearls: The ‘pearls’ on this Givenchy dress, by Darian Colpitts, are crafted with glue from a hot glue gun! Between the glue and the crisply folded tissue paper on the bodice and skirt, the delicate attention to detail secured a spot in my top three.

Spring Floral: It’s almost Spring and I’m a sucker for florals. This Ralph & Russo dress, recreated by Karlee Frank, is covered in individually hand-crafted flowers of different shapes, sizes and colours, giving the bodice depth and texture.

Café Couture: I love coffee, but I’ll never look at coffee filters the same way again! Jessica Clayton-Carroll hand-crafted this everyday essential to create the skirt on this Mohammed Ashi gown – which, I might add, practically glows under the sunlight of the East Galleria!

I want to know which dress is your favourite! Until March 27, post a photo of your favourite dress to Instagram using the hashtag #papercouture2018 and tag @oakridgecentre and @langaracollege for a chance to win a $500 Oakridge Gift Card!
