Anticipating the Oscars
It’s almost time for the Oscars! I’ve been preparing for my annual viewing party – I’m planning on watching the red carpet in my Dot Georgette Jumpsuit from Michael Kors and Stuart Weitzman Suede Legend Pumps. That outfit and a swipe of red lipstick is enough to spark me with fierce confidence, as if I could own the red carpet alongside Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington.
In trying to fill out my Oscars Ballot before the party, I did some quick research into past winners for the Costume Design category. I noticed that most of the more recent winners have fallen under one of three categories: Period Piece, Musical, or Fantasy. I had been going back and forth between Beauty and the Beast and Victoria & Abdul, but now I think my choice is clear. While Victoria & Abdul is a Period Piece, Beauty and the Beast fits in all three categories!
Beauty and the Beast’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, won an Oscar for her work on Anna Karenina in 2013, so she’s no stranger to working in another era. But for Beauty and the Beast, she managed to combine historically accurate 18th century France designs with the imagery that fans fell in love with in the 1991 animated film. Plus, Belle’s iconic gold gown was even more magical than anticipated and, in my personal opinion, should be enough to have this award signed and sealed.
Beauty and the Beast definitely has my vote this year. However, The Shape of Water won the Excellence in Period Film category at the Costume Design Guild Awards earlier this month, so maybe we’re in for a surprise!
